Flyng with Sex Toys: Will Airport Security Check Your Bag?

“Lush Sensation provides independent reviews of adult toy brands. We hope you love the products we recommend.”

I don’t know if you keep up with the news (unfortunately. (I do), but flying has been even more stressful.

Between rising prices and long security lines, another thing you have to worry about is, “Can I bring this?”

One item that you may be debating on bringing is a dildo. Or several of them. But you may hesitate.

What happens if you finally get to the security checkpoint, only for them to take out a dildo from your suitcase and demand you throw it away?

Not only is that an embarrassment, but it’s also a waste of money!

So, I’m here to answer those security questions you were afraid to ask your flying friends.

Can You Bring Sex Toys on a Plane?

Let’s just answer this question right away: Yes! A vibrator or sex toy is not much different than a phone or laptop, at the end of the day.

You can bring your toys in a carry-on or checked bag, so put them wherever you see fit.

Traveling with sex toys is not weird; it’s normal, in fact. One survey of adult women found that many are traveling with their favorite toys.

When it comes to lingerie, 67% traveled with that. Almost half (47%) traveled with lube, and 36% said they traveled with sex toys.

Personally, I think that number is higher, but some women like being modest! Women even travel with handcuffs and other BDSM toys (18%.)

So yes, you’re fine with traveling with your toys.

But there are some considerations before you chuck your toys in the suitcase. Let’s look at some of them.

Traveling to Another Country? Double-Check!

In most countries, having sex toys is no biggie. Traveling to Japan? They have multiple-story sex shops there. You’re fine.

Traveling to Saudi Arabia?

Your dildo is the equivalent of a bag of cocaine. What is perfectly legal in one country may be illegal in another.

It sounds ridiculous, but you could be serving time for having a dildo.

I suppose you could store your toys in a hidden compartment and be low-key about it, but I wouldn’t risk it!

Bondage is Another Story

In most areas, it’s fine to travel with a dildo. However, if you’re bringing your whips, chains, and other bondage gear, you may want to think twice.

Some places have strict rules on bondage gear, so look up your local laws.

How to Pack Without Worry

With that said, you should pack your toys carefully. You’re allowed to bring them through TSA, but the last thing you want is for one to go off or get damaged in flight. Here are some tips.

Know What You’re Packing

What type of toys you’re packing can help you decide how to pack. There are three main types of toys.

We already discussed bondage items and how they may be illegal in certain areas. That brings me on to two more types of toys: bullets and larger toys.

Bullet vibrators are discreet. Some are even disguised as household objects, like lipstick. Therefore, you can pop this in your carry-on or even a personal laptop bag without much worry.

However, if you’re bringing a larger toy, you may want to pop it in your checked bag.

Use a Sex Toy Travel Bag

On Amazon, or at your local sex shop, you can find sex toy bags for fairly cheap.

They not only keep things all organized, with many pockets and compartments, but they will save you some embarrassment should security need to search through your other belongings.

Another reason why you should use a sex toy bag is that they often come with locks. Often, there will be a combination lock on the bag that you can set to whatever numbers you please.

This lock can be helpful if you want a little more peace of mind.

Finally, sex toy bags let you find everything easily when it’s time to have some fun in the hotel room.

Most sex toy bags have compartments that fit your lube or charging cords perfectly.

No Bag? No Problem!

Sometimes, you don’t have a sex toy bag. Maybe yours is ripped, and you have to leave tomorrow.

In that case, you can still put your toy in your suitcase, but be smart. Put it at the top, not the bottom.

If it’s a bullet vibrator, you can pop it in your makeup or laptop bag. Alternatively, wrap other items around the toy. Think of a towel or a shirt.

Clean Your Toys

For God’s sake, clean your sex toys, especially if you’re traveling. Use soap and water, or spritz them with a toy cleaner.

Then, ensure they are dry.

You don’t want them to be damp and make a wet mess in your suitcase.

Checked Vs. Carry-On Vs. Personal Item

If you’re new to flying, you should know there are three types of ways to bring your belongings on a plane.

Let me list the pros and cons of each:

Checked Bags

This type of bag is checked in before you enter TSA, usually in the area where you pick up your plane tickets.

You give the bags to the employee behind the counter, and the bags go down the conveyor belt and are stored on the plane.

Checked bags mean that you don’t need to worry about the TSA pulling out a dildo.

And as long as the toy is turned off, toys with internal lithium-ion batteries can be put in a checked bag.

However, checked bags have pesky weight limits, and if you go over that, you may pay more.

Know the weight limits of the airline beforehand. The last thing you want is to have to take out the dildo in front of everyone to make your bag lighter.

Also, checked bags are only retrieved after your flight is finished. So if you have multiple flights and may need to stay in a hotel as a layover, you won’t be able to use the toy.

Not to mention, it’s possible for a checked bag to get lost or damaged.

Carry-On

As the name suggests, you carry this bag with you on the flight, then store it in a compartment above your seat.

Carry-ons tend to include smaller suitcases, and they can be accessed easily after your flight.

That being said, they carry a higher risk of embarrassment if the TSA takes out a toy or if it goes off during the flight.

Personal Item

This describes an item like a purse or laptop bag that you carry on you.

This bag can fit smaller bullet vibrators and other discreet toys, and they can be more conveniently accessed, even on a flight.

However, these bags are even less discreet than carry-ons.

Prevent Your Vibrator from Going Off

When you imagine traveling with your vibrators, you may think of the toy buzzing in your bag and your face becoming beet red when others hear it.

Luckily, it’s easy for you to avoid this mistake from happening. Here are some ways to do that.

See If Your Toy Has a Travel Lock Feature

If your vibrator has a travel lock, switch it on. Travel locks prevent the toy from turning on while on a bumpy flight, or when you’re rushing to the gate.

Some toys don’t have travel locks, but are accident-proof. For example, you have to press the button down for a few seconds to turn it on, then press it again.

Think Lovense toys, for example.

Remove the Batteries (If Applicable)

Do you have an old-school toy that uses AA or AAA batteries?

The best way to prevent your toys from going off is to remove the batteries and store them in a separate area of your sex toy bag.

Pack Light

Look, you’re on vacation. You don’t need to bring your entire collection with you. Well, you can, but it’s less of a hassle if you bring one or two of your favorite toys and a bottle of lube.

Who knows? You may find a sex shop at the place you’re traveling to and bring home a little friend.

This also means that your toys shouldn’t be oversized. Size matters in this case, pun intended.

Instead of bringing your 8-inch dildo with a realistic pair of cock and balls, settle for the smaller, more discreet bullet vibrator.

Pack Inexpensive

I would recommend you pack your toys that aren’t worth that much. Look, we love our $200 Bluetooth vibrators with heating and a rotating head to boot.

But you know what we don’t love?

The bag it’s in getting lost, or disappearing somewhere in the abyss of your hotel room. That’s why I recommend bringing the cheapies.

Though if you know you won’t lose it, then go ahead and pack what you want!

Pack Durable

Finally, I would recommend you pack toys that can take a few mishandlings of a butter-fingered airline employee (or maybe you’re the butter-fingered one!)

This means that you should avoid packing glass toys or pack them carefully.

Personally, if I need to pack something, like I’m shipping it via FedEx, I try not to bring it.

In Summary

Sex toys can be packed on flights, but you need to pack smart to avoid embarrassment and to make sure your toys make it to their destination safely.

Get a travel bag, use travel locks, and pack your smallest, least fragile/expensive items if possible. Happy travels!

FAQ

Do You Need to Declare Your Sex Toys?

You do not need to declare them your sex toys. However, I would recommend removing them from their packaging and storing them in a bag when returning home.

Can You Bring Lube Through TSA?

Yes, but there are limits. The TSA won’t allow any liquids in containers larger than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters). If your container is larger, put it inside a checked bag.

Can TSA Confiscate My Sex Toys?

No, it is very unlikely that TSA will confiscate your sex toys. If possible, ensure that there is a travel lock on them, and store them in their own bags.

Should You Remove the Batteries?

You don’t need to remove the batteries. However, if a toy does have removable batteries, you may want to do so to prevent the toy from going off. If the removable battery is lithium-ion, however, it cannot be stored separately in a checked bag.

What if My Sex Toy is Made of Glass or a Delicate Material?

You can bring sex toys made from glass on both your checked and carry-on luggage. With that said, you want to make sure they’re securely wrapped. Use bubble wrap, or if you’re struggling, your clothes.

Is it Okay to Travel With Sex Toys in a Shared Suitcase?

Yes! Just make sure your toys are stored properly, and that you don’t go over the weight limit for baggage!
